Community embraces Narooma Busking Festival

Strong community support has ensured that Narooma will again host Busking Championships in 2020 in association with Narooma Rotary, on Saturday, May 30.

Narooma's regional event is part of the Australian National Busking Championships.

Narooma's continued involvement had been under threat because, with the unavailability of three key members of the Busking committee due to long planned holidays, Narooma Rotary Club would not have the capacity to organise the 2020 event.

Narooma Rotary president Ange Ulrichsen was delighted that over 50 people representing many local businesses, community organisations and buskers met with Rotarians to discuss the situation last Thursday at the Golf Club.

"The numbers who came plus the great outcome really shows how much the community has embraced this wonderful event," Ms Ulrichsen said.

Rotarian Sandra Doyle, instigator of Narooma's Busking Championships in 2017, had earlier told the meeting, "We can't let it go from Narooma".

She urged those at the meeting to "please have a go", adding that the effort of putting on the event "is worth it to fill the town with music and with so many happy people".

Six new people volunteered to join several Rotarians in a new committee to bring about the 2020 Championships, coordinated by Di Riley from Narooma Chamber of Commerce.

"I think it's really important to keep the Busking Championships in Narooma," Ms Riley said.

"I'm delighted to be working with such a strong group to make the 2020 event happen."

The new committee consists of coordinator Di Riley, Averill Berriman of ABC Property Sales, Therese Aston, Shannon Chambers of Easts Holiday Parks, Dee Cramb of Sea Salt Café Dalmeny, Cherie Cunninghame of NAB, Jen French, and Rotarians John Rungen, Chris O'Brien, Lynn Hastings and Laurelle Pacey.
