Strong winds from the intense low pressure cell created the 17.7-meter wave, which was recorded at 4.30am on Monday, June 6.
The wave easily broke the previous record set in April 2015, when Sydney’s WaveRider buoy recorded a 14.9 meter wave – the largest since measurements began in the early 1970s.
A maximum wave height of 11.05m was recorded by the wave buoy off Port Kembla at 11pm on June 5, just hours before the record-high wave was felt off Eden.
The Eden wave buoy went adrift in the early morning on June 5, according to a government website.
The buoy was tracked by satellite and recovered by a local vessel operator on June 8.
