ACM asked National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) if there was an existing maintenance schedule for Ben Boyd's tower or any provision being made to recognise and protect the significant piece of local heritage.
A NPWS spokesperson said NPWS was redeveloping the Boyd's Tower visitor precinct damaged in the 2019/20 bushfires, and the planned work was not part of the proposed Light to Light Walk project.
"The works at Boyd's Tower include replacing the viewing platform, a new path to the tower to improve accessibility, a new car park, new signage and toilet facilities," the spokesperson said.
While these planned works are excellent news for the area surrounding the structure, no mention was made specifically about maintenance of the tower itself or any potential heritage protection.
Jonathan Gaul, president of Boydtown Shipyard, operators of Boydtown History Centre, said those core concerns were not being addressed.
"It's a very old sandstone structure and there is meant to be a maintenance program," Mr Gaul said.
"I will be asking candidates in the upcoming government byelection to push for the site to get state heritage recognition - it's justified for this integral part of the history of NSW."
