NEW CASES
* 1438 new locally acquired cases, marking a 50 per cent increase on the day before
* Five deaths: a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s from Whittlesea, a man in his 70s from Moreland, and two men - one in his 60s and one in his 90s - from Hume
* Death toll from the current outbreak: 41
* 398 people in hospital, of whom 83 are in intensive care, including 57 on a ventilator
* Total active cases: 11,018
* About 500 of the latest cases resulted from people having illegal social gatherings over the AFL grand final long weekend
* Of the latest cases in metropolitan Melbourne:
- 25 per cent are from the southeast and eastern suburbs

VACCINATIONS
* 34,323 COVID-19 vaccine doses on Wednesday at state-run hubs
* 80.3 per cent of Victorians have received their first COVID-19 jab, while 49.5 per cent are double-vaccinated
* There will also be a shift in 88,000 Moderna vaccine doses from community pharmacies to state clinics to hasten the rollout
* Pfizer jab intervals will halve, going from six weeks to three weeks apart
