Seven years ago there were widespread demonstrations against Israeli's military offensive in Gaza.

There were also riots, with vandals attacking a synagogue and Jewish shops.

Darmanin said he had instructed the Paris police prefect to ban demonstrations on Saturday but did not provide further information.

As the state's leading representatives in each region, the prefect has to be particularly vigilant, he said.

The ban comes as deadly violence spreads in the Middle East, with Palestinian militants continuing their rocket attacks on Israel which is responding with massive air strikes.
