Joanne Korner, chairwoman of Imagine Eden said the stones had been there her whole lifetime and as long as her mother could remember too.
"I decided I couldn't let them go into backfill for the road, my conscience kept telling me," Ms Korner said.
Ms Korner said apparently the stones are the same as the original rock work in the alcoves in front of Eden Fishermen's Club.
She is working together with Eden Community Access Centre (ECAC) and Eden Visitor Information Centre (EVIC) to plan for a new use for the stones and apply for funding to assist with the project.
Billy Michelin is undertaking the roadwork under a Bega Valley Shire Council contract and has agreed to store the stones until it was decided how they could be used within the town.
"The ladies at Warren's Walk who look after the garden beds along the walkway down to the wharf would like to use some for the edging there too," Ms Korner said.
Ms Korner said a meeting would be held about the project at a time to be advised and those wishing to become involved are welcome to attend.
ECAC manager Carina Severs said EVIC, Eden Chamber of Commerce and ECAC have been looking at improving the entry points to town.
"We would like to see welcoming entry points for people to pull over, have a look at what's where in town, maybe some tables and seats," Ms Severs said.
"People are really keen for something like that to happen, other towns have really nice entry points, with good maps and signage to welcome people. Our local community groups believe it would be an asset to the town."
Ms Severs said a project proposal had recently been submitted to the council and there were funding sources in mind, but she was now waiting for council to raise the matter at its next meeting.
"We hope to utilise that stone, it would make for easy maintenance. The idea would be to use the BVSC badging already existing in the shire, which for Eden is a whale tail," she said.
