At about 3.30pm on Monday, emergency services were called to Richmond Beach in the Murramarang National Park after reports a snorkeller entered the water and was not seen again.
Police were told the 39-year-old snorkeller entered the water from the rocks.
"When he failed to return and could not be located, authorities were notified," a police spokesperson said.
South Coast Police District officers commenced a search of the area with help from Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue, Eurobodalla Shire Council Lifeguards and the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.
However, police said the search was scaled back at 8pm due to bad light.
The search resumed at about 6am today (Tuesday 26 January 2021).
"Assistance has been sought from the Marine Area Command, Police Divers and PolAir," the police spokesperson said.
