The NRL competition returned on Thursday, but the round was forgettable for a number of Group 16 stars with the Melbourne Storm, St George Illawarra Dragons and the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs all capitulating to their rivals.
The Dragons were the first up on the card, but were handed an embarrassing 18-0 defeat at the hands of the New Zealand Warriors.
Unfortunately, Pambula export Euan Aitken got little game time, running out just 21 minutes off the bench for the Dragons in a match the club will aim to swiftly put behind it.
Aitken had put faith in the Dragons' match fitness going in to the restart, but he was given little time to illustrate it.
Meanwhile, Bega's Dale Finucane was a shining beacon of hope for the Storm as he clinched his maiden try for 2020 off a neat pass from Cameron Smith, but it was the club's sole try for the night as the Canberra Raiders got up 22-6.
"I don't look to the past too much in terms of a team winning against us," Dale had told the NRL ahead of their clash at AAMI Park in Melbourne.
However, he conceded the Storm had been keen to see what the Raiders would bring to the table.
"Watching the first two rounds is the most relevant for us to know what they do, as a new year you work on your own different strategies and that's probably where you get most of your preview from.
"They are a really good side and they pipped us in the finals to get into the prelim, so we know they are a quality side."
Former Tathra Sea Eagle Adam Elliott also had a tough day at the office, called away from his family and newborn son in the Northern Territory to play just 12 minutes in the 32-6 loss to Manly.
"I'm over the moon but it's obviously pretty tough for me to be away from them," Elliott told the NRL after his first son, Lennex, came into the world just three short weeks ago.
Elliott said it was nearing departure time for his NRL return when coach Dean Pay made the call to congratulate the Lock, and give him some time with his family.
"I really appreciate the Bulldogs support and Dean giving me that extra time up there with my family, time that I will forever cherish."
Cobargo forward Morgan Boyle did not get a run for his Manly-Waringah club.
Pambula-born Jack Williams who plays in the number 13 for the Cronulla Sharks also had a tough day at the office as the NRL resumed over the weekend.
The former Eden, Pambula and Cooma player ran out 39 minutes for the Sharks at Bankwest Stadium in Sydney against the Wests Tigers, but despite good signs of life from the Cronulla club, the Tigers ran out at 28-16 result.
