President of the Bermagui Skate Park Association Jacqui Howarth said the school holidays have been “chaotic”, with plenty of the town’s youth taking advantage of the timely completion of the park.
“The kids have really gone for it – it has been really popular,” Ms Howarth said.
Also worth celebrating is the young people of Bermagui’s “ownership” of the park.
Landscaper Jim Collins said he has had his own “volunteer work crew” with a handful of young boys taking time out from their own school holidays to help him spread and rake dirt ahead of grass seed planting this week.
“And if anyone drops rubbish they get chatted up by the other kids in no uncertain terms,” Mr Collins said.
Ms Howarth said because the town’s youth has been waiting so long for their own skate park “they are really taking responsibility and looking after it”.
“It’s a positive thing in terms of community building and relationship building,” she said.
“It [the skate park] is something they’re proud of – it’s a fun place.
“And it’s changing the troublesome element of Bermagui.
“All the kids are really getting along and laughing and smiling with each other.”
The skate park’s official opening will take place on Saturday from around 2pm onwards, with a ceremony at 3pm.
Ms Howarth encouraged anyone who has had a hand in fundraising and planning the project to head along so the public can acknowledge their efforts.
