The not for profit organisation has been providing sustenance and good old fashioned chatter to Bega Valley’s elderly, disabled and house-bound community for close to 50 years, with the first deliveries beginning in 1970.
The meals, freshly prepared at Jigamy Farm, are distributed by volunteer delivery drivers to houses across the town. The drivers said the main satisfaction they receive from delivering Meals on Wheels is the social interaction and conversations they have with the clients.
Delivery driver Loretta Thornton has lived in Eden for over 70 years and knows most of the people who receive deliveries.
She said she enjoys the sense of community involvement she gets from volunteering.
“I love a good chat,” she said with a laugh.
“I also love knowing that I am giving someone a nice meal for the day.”
Eden local Jill Troth volunteered for Meals on Wheels after reading about the organisation in the Magnet.
“I look forward to it every week. I have a co-driver with me who is pleasant company. We take it in turns to drive and it’s an enjoyable ride.”
After her parents passed away in 2015, Julie Ristonovic decided she wanted to join Meals on Wheels. Volunteering with the organisation has helped her stay connected to her parents’ friends.
“I enjoy going around to people’s houses, I know most of them,” said Ms Ristonovic.
“It’s not just about delivering meals, it’s also about catching up, having a chat and a laugh.”
“I recommend people join up. It’s a lot of fun, it gives you a sense of purpose and something to look forward to,” she added.
Meals on Wheels client Barbara Fulton looks forward to her visits from the drivers.
“It’s nice to have them come around – they not only deliver good food, they also deliver a good chat.”
