“Our opposition ended up being with Bega High School and Carroll College Broulee,” coach Paul Gilbert said.
“The girls were energetic and excited and completely ready for the day. Our captain and team manager for the day was Hannah Powell and she should be commended for her all round leadership performance.”
Mr Gilbert said the opening game against Bega was a thriller in a low-scoring encounter. A Jemma Pollock goal put Eden in front 9-2 at the break, but a quick recovery from Bega had them scoring twice to lead 14-9 with just seconds to go.
He said the Eden squad rallied to push play forward and it was again Pollock coming out of a stoppage to hit a quickshot on goal for the winning six-pointer.
“A win in game two would mean a clear passage to the next stage in Canberra, and the chat among the girls was set on a strong performance,” Mr Gilbert said.
However, Carroll College got off to a flying start with the strong breeze at their backs pushing play into Eden’s defensive end.
Mr Gilbert said the endeavour was starting to show as the squad became fatigued to trail 12-0 at the break and during the half time talk “the Eden mob were not happy”.
“But with a bit more hustle around the ruck and a better share of the ball we were a chance.”
Now, with the wind at their backs, the Eden girls charged to the front, with a small flurry of goals coming through for the team.
The result meant the Eden High girls were named the South Coast Champions.
“Congratulations to all the girls involved with the team,” Mr Gilbert said.
“You represented your school and families with pride and sportsmanship. All the best in the next round.”
“Thank you to the parents who transported our players to Tuross Heads, and to the Eden staff who covered lessons at school on the day. Events like this can not happen without considerable areas of support.”
The squad will compete in Canberra on Thursday as part of the next round of the championships.
The school wished the team luck and hoped to see the squad kick a few goals against the Canberra outfits.
