After her son Joshua finished his cancer treatment, enduring 43 cycles of chemotherapy and 24 cycles of radiation, Eden resident Hannah Cody was confident they could move on with their lives.

However, Ms Cody now awaits a phone call from the Sydney Children’s Hospital to hear if oncologists can remove a 2.5cm tumor from her four-year-old son’s liver. The cancer had shrunk but not disappeared.
“To hear that he still has cancer is shattering,” she said. “It is hard to keep your faith, to keep positive.”
Through moments of grinding despair, her son’s positivity, and her approach to his cancer journey, has kept her buoyant.
“He is always bubbly and smiling, running in and out of the treatment rooms,” she said.
When Joshua was diagnosed with a rare form of soft-tissue cancer in May of last year, Ms Cody decided not to tell her son the full story of his diagnosis.
“I didn’t keep it hidden, but I tried to be positive and normalise what he was going through as much as possible,” she said.
Ms Cody spent several months in Brisbane where her son was receiving his treatment, which included being separated from her other children. This separation included missing out on important milestones in her daughters’ lives.
“The hardest part was being separated from my two girls,” Ms Cody said.
“I wasn’t there when my youngest took her first step or said her first word, that was really hard.”
Taking time away to care for her son also meant that Ms Cody had to cease work, which caused her undue financial stress.
“The little bit of savings I had was gone in the first month of caring for Joshua, “ she said. “Unfortunately medicines are not free, and they all add up.”
Ms Cody was overwhelmed by the kindness shown to her when she returned to Eden, particularly by her former employers.
“I was working with Eden Motel before I left, and when I returned James and Susanna gave me my job back,” she said.
However with the prospect of further cancer treatment for Joshua, Ms Cody will once again face financial uncertainty.
