Following meetings last year, Mackay-based architects STEA have produced a number of drawings showing the proposed building work.
The airport has received funding for three projects, just under $1 million from the state government for water upgrades, which has now been completed, $4.4m from the state government to bring the runway to a standard where it can accommodate the Dash 8/Q400 and ATR72 aircraft and $1.2m from the federal government for screening facilities. The federal government funding will be matched by Bega Valley Shire Council funding.
“We now have detailed designs which we will be finessing and checking against the budget. We haven’t yet finished talking to all stakeholders though,” Ms Symons said.
“However we hope to finish across February and March and then all being well it will go out to tender,” Ms Symons added. The new building will be attached to the existing one.
“Airport operations have to continue while building work takes place and there must be minimal disruption to the existing building.”
The terminal upgrade which will allow screening and will provide more space for passengers must be completed during the course of the next financial year.
On the question of the runway extension Ms Symons said design, engineering, environmental and CASA requirements would be worked through over the next six months.
