Blake Maher said that approximately 150 years ago his ancestors, members of a family of Moorheads, left Northern Ireland and settled in the small coastal town of Bathurst, New Brunswick.
Mr Maher still resides in this Canadian town but is hoping to reconnect with other members of the Moorhead family who traveled Australia and ended up living in Eden and Bega.
“For decades afterwards letters and photos were exchanged but the correspondence finally ceased around World War II,” Mr Maher wrote in his email to the Magnet.
The Canadian descendants still have some of the writings and photos that were sent to them from Eden during this time.
A particularly noteworthy piece of correspondence includes a photo taken in 1906 of the family home of a W. J. Moorhead.
On behalf of his family, Mr Maher is attempting to reach out to see if any of the descendants of this W.J. Moorhead still reside in the Eden area.
Mr Maher is also interested to find out if they, by any chance, have letters or photos that were sent to them in the early 1900s from family in Canada.
See the Eden Magnet website to see the 1906 photo and if you have any information or know how to contact the Moorheads please email melanie.leach@fairfaxmedia.com.au.
