Eden Marine High School teacher Kate Mamone explained that STEM involved science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with stage three teachers planning an appropriate project.
“The 'Chicken Coop for Tarerergudje' activity was implemented in term three,” Ms Mamone said last week.
“All students were totally engaged in the project-based learning task.”
Ms Mamone was invited to introduce and explain the design process to the students, who were then were split into groups.
“They researched, designed and constructed their model of a chicken coop,” Ms Mamone said.
“The coop is currently being constructed by members of the Eden's Men’s Shed, with materials donated by Mitre 10, Blue Ridge Timber, and members of the community.”
STEM advisors Katherine Cartwright and Tanya Coli in Sydney were invited to Eden to see what the students had achieved.
“They were so impressed with the project they asked the Eden Primary School teachers - Sue Lee, Donna Beaven, Nadia Morris and Jenny Edwards - and myself to present the project at the NSW STEM Showcase in Sydney at the Hilton Hotel on Tuesday November 29,” Ms Mamone said.
The Sydney advisors told the Eden teachers their project had “aspects the other schools don’t have”.
“In your presentation we would love for you to focus on the ways in which you have been inclusive of the special education class, your community connections with the Men’s shed, and the transition connection to Eden HS,” the advisors said.
Eden Public School teacher Sue Lee said the Sydney invitation was “a feather in the cap” for the teachers and students.
“It was a great example of collaboration between Eden Public and Eden Marine High to implement a challenging, rewarding project,” Ms Lee said.
“Future projects between the two schools are already being planned.”
Ms Mamone said it was a wonderful experience, and exciting as a high school teacher to see the fantastic quality of work and level of confidence and skill coming through the school.
