On June 25, the 21-year-old had her life ahead of her when an incident at a party left her with weeks of unbearable pain.
The Far South Coast woman was at a party in Wollongong, where she now lives, when a man fell on her and trapped her on a metal fire pit.
“I was trapped under his weight, I couldn’t get up, it fell like forever even though I’ve been told people helped me in a matter of seconds,” Ms Crane said.
“I tried to walk away, but then I looked down and saw my skin was hanging off me, that’s when I went into shock.”
Ms Crane was taken to hospital with severe third degree burns from her lower back down.
She remained in the Concord Burns Unit for three weeks where she was bedridden and underwent multiple skin transplants.
She was unable to lie on her back and sleeping was near impossible as she was woken every two hours for IV blood thinners for clots and for pain relief medication.
She has lost all feeling along the back of her legs, upper inner thighs and bottom and still needs to go to hospital regularly to have her dressings changed.
“Each visit is traumatic, the pain is indescribable.”
Ms Crane, a beauty therapist, has been unable to go back to work and is struggling coming to terms with what has happened.
“My job and was to promote healthy skin and looking after my skin was so important to me and now I’m covered in scars.”
Ms Crane has a long road ahead as she recovers from the scarring, both mental and physical.
She just picked up a compression garment that she will have to wear for 23 hours a day, for two years.
Her post-operative treatment, counselling, physiotherapy and skin therapy will cost thousands and now the local community is getting behind the Eden High graduate.
