Sources confirmed that the body - believed to be that of a 68-year-old man - was retrieved by officers from the Far South Coast local area command on Tuesday night.
In heartbreaking tributes posted on the Eden Magnet's Facebook site, the man's two children wrote: "Rip dad!! I love you so goddam much" and "Rip dad".
Condolence messages to the man's family and emergency services officers who attended the incident were also posted.
One member of the community wrote it was "time for Eden to band together again" and also ask RU OK? - a reference to the nationally recognised suicide prevention and mental illness awareness day.
The man's vehicle has not been recovered because conditions were not conducive.
A further assessment regarding the retrieval of the car will be made by police today.
NSW Police issued a formal statement relating to the incident on Tuesday afternoon.
"A police operation on the NSW Far South Coast to retrieve a vehicle that went over a cliff at the end of Bramble St, Eden, has been suspended due to weather conditions,” a NSW Police Force spokesperson said.
“The vehicle was seen to drive over the cliff at about 8.15pm Monday, October 26, and land in the water at the bottom.
“It’s believed the driver was a 68-year-old man.
"Eden Water Police will attempt to access the site once conditions have eased.
"The incident is not believed to be suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” the statement said.
The Magnet has been told that a police patrol car, which was on the lookout for the vehicle, may have witnessed the incident.
The incident occurred directly below Eden Marine Rescue's headquarters.
