In his trademark style, Cullen sung songs with such themes as heartbreak and loneliness, backed up by a big sound from his band.
Jay McMahon was on the drums, Matt Nightingale on bass and Pete Wild joined them on piano.
Playing to a full house of 130 people, Cullen opened the night with his new songs "Two Left Feet" and "Another Blue World".
He performed some of the favourite songs from his first two albums and played seven out of eight tracks on “Outsiders”.
The show featured a new arrangement in the hall – with musicians backed against a side wall instead of on the stage – which allowed all in the crowd to get much closer to the performers and provided a more intimate performance.
The crowd knew they were in safe hands with regular band member and “ex-Heath Cullen and the 45” drummer McMahon, and Nightingale, who recently played a duo set with Cullen at the last Major’s Creek Folk Festival, worked wonders on the bass.
Wild’s piano added warmth to the songs and resonated well in the hall.
At one point the band left for Cullen to perform alone, and the whole crowd enjoyed the show enough to demand them to return for one more song – Cullen’s popular “Break My Heart”.
Funding for the new album had been raised through a crowdfunding website, and Cullen said on the night that anyone who had ordered their copy of “Outsiders” through this site should see it in their mail in the near future.
Before Cullen took to the stage, the night was opened by a range of talented support musicians – Ella Rose, Tim Winterflood, Mitchell Rubly and Robyn Martin.
