NSW Fire and Rescue fire fighter Malcolm Lavender, from the Bombala Fire station, visited the school this week as part of the NSWFB Fire-ED program.
The program is structured specifically to the cognitive ability of children in the age group of 5-12 years, allowing them to actively participate in demonstrations and discussions on emergency strategies for both at school and at home.
“This year, our objective was to develop children’s confidence with the introduction a new activity to the NSWFB Fire Ed Program,” Mr Lavender said.
“In the safe controlled environment of the classroom, children had the opportunity to experience making and listening to a ‘000’ call.
“The Bombala Fire Station has recently expanded its Fire-ED program by volunteering time to visit some of the Monaro’s smaller schools and it was such a pleasure to be invited into the classrooms at Wyndham.
“The children were so enthusiastic throughout the afternoon”.
The NSWFB SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) was on display, with a visual display of a mock ‘search and rescue’ in the classroom.
It was a wonderful opportunity to reinforce key safety messages and hopefully discussion at home.
Fire and Rescue NSW's purpose is to enhance community safety, quality of life and confidence by minimising the impact of hazards and emergency incidents on the people, environment and economy of NSW.
“The best way to keep your family out of harm’s way and identify potential risks is by doing a FRNSW/GIO online home fire safety checklist and making sure you have working smoke alarms and a practised home escape plan,” Mr Lavender said.
“Please visit our website, where families can also find many valuable resources including home evacuation plans and interactive games for their children.”
