Seven teams and plenty of supporters turned out for a fun round robin tournament of traditional Australia Day cricket on Sunday.
Competing for the Owen Allen Trophy, teams played off in eight over matches, with runs from juniors and females being doubled.
Around 200 people turned out to enjoy the day in excellent conditions with more than 60 taking to the field for a fun game and a laugh.
Boardshorts and thongs were the order of the day as players and spectators alike embraced the sunshine.
For the second time in just three years Spink Tiling has claimed the Owen Allan Cricket Challenge Trophy said event organiser Drew Mudaliar.
“They took it away after chasing down the Great Southern Inn’s 70 run target,” Mudaliar said.
Mudaliar said Nicole Crowe was a standout performer for the Spink team.
“She was definitely the star of the day, earning man of the match honours in the final.
“She scored 50 not out and guided her side to victory.
“It is the first ever half century in the history of the eight over competition,” he said.
The day also saw money being donated to charity with Spink Tiling able to nominate a recipient after their win.
“They elected to donate $250 of the winning prize to the Eden Sport and Recreation Club with $500 going to ESSCI to assist with their Gallipoli Garden project for RSL park,” Mudaliar said.
A small ceremony was held to raise the Australian flag while Allen Gibson spoke about the heritage of Australia Day and the lifestyles we enjoy today.
Meanwhile, the day also included a catching contest thanks to a bucket of tennis balls and the club’s bowling machine.
“40 contestants lined up to catch tennis balls spat from the club’s bowling machine.
“With those dropping their chance being eliminated.
“Nicole completed her all star day by also taking out the catching competition.”
Mudaliar said after her spectacular performance at the crease Crowe caught her way to a playoff for the prize.
“It came down to Nicole and Daryl Grewar as the last two standing with Nicole taking away the $60 cash prize and a $70 voucher from Eden2Bega Iphone repairs.”
Mudaliar said the day was very successful and thanked everyone who went along for making it an enjoyable day.
There was a number of highlights on the including endless sunshine and a motorised esky, which kept youngsters entertained for hours on end.
Members of ESSCI also provided a barbecue on the day which ensured no one went hungry and Mudaliar said another highlight was the Curalo Medical Clinic team showing up to compete in surgical scrubs.
