On Saturday, October 20, 76 patrons attended the annual cup day for a four person ambrose event sponsored by IMB Eden.
With perhaps only an hour of play left, the threatened fierce storm descended and sent players scurrying for the clubhouse.
“We knew there was a storm coming, another hour and things would have been fine,” Eden men’s golf president John Fletcher said.
As is was, most players had manged to get 11-12 holes in, before play was called off immediately due to the threat of lightning – not a nice prospect surrounded by trees and holding steel sticks.
All was not lost however as the committee decided to make it a nine-hole competition with winners awarded accordingly.
Then all enjoyed drinks, nibblies, raffles and auction in the clubhouse, with proceeds all to the benefit of the Whale Festival committee.
“It all went off really well, the day was brilliant [other than the storm],” Fletcher said.
“It’s a charity day with all the proceeds from the raffles and part of the green fees a donation to the Whale Festival from Eden Golf Club and the Fishermen’s Club.
“This [Whale Festival] is an important event in the Eden community.
“Michael Sawers [president of the Whale Festival Committee] and his team do a wonderful job promoting the event and put a lot of time and money to make it a success.
“I’m really looking forward to this one,” Fletcher said.
In results from the storm-shortened day of golf, winners of the prestigious cup were the combination Andrew Terry, Bob Bowden, Laura Walker and Michael Beavan.
In future ambrose events, especially if the yellow tees are in operation, members would be well advised to include a female sharp shooter in their team, Fletcher said.
From all reports, Whale Festival officials were very pleased with the outcome, both financial and socially, and the golf club wished them well for the upcoming festival. The club committee also thanked Fletcher for his help in the lead-up to the day.
Next Saturday members and visitors will greet the starter for a single stableford event with Mitre 10 (Eden) the sponsor.
Time slots are now available for the Volkswagen scramble event to be held on Sunday, November 18. Call the pro shop on 6496 1045 or go online.
Ladies
Meanwhile, playing off the yellow tees for a single stableford sponsored by the club last Wednesday, a very dismal field would have enjoyed the stroll without any holdups.
Playing off a 17 handicap Anne Wilcox blitzed her rivals with a superb round of 42 points.
The runner-up was Pat Feathers who amassed a five off the pace 37 points.
Ball winners were Anne, Pat, Ros and Rae also nearest the pins were Ros, Pat and Rae who also claimed the golden shot on the 18th.
Dads Army
Realising that daylight saving began two weeks ago, 18 starters marched to the first tee to contest the usual stableford playing off the yellow markers.
Tim Lyons took advantage of the short course by landing 30 points for victory.
Nads Hetaraka took the runner-up honours with 28 points.
Club captain Mark Davidson may have been over excited having to play off the yellow markers for he easily claimed the “Rabbit Trap” with his 14 points off a 5 handicap.
Nearest the pins went to Jeff and Steve.
Next Sunday the troops play for the Monthly Trophy sponsored by Pambula Butchery and they are not playing off the yellow markers
