Eden was one of only a few schools in the Valley to get involved in the Planet Ark initiative that seeks to help children “grow grit, resilience, problem solving and develop a connection with nature”.
Local bush regenerator and Eden Visitor Information Centre staff member Zoe Burke coordinated the pupils in planting 60 seedlings, all native species endemic to the region.
The plants were supplied by the Bega Valley Shire Council, with BVSC natural assets officer Andrew Morrison on hand to give the children some insight into the species being planted, including those used as bush tucker.
Species included lomandra grass, bulbine lilies (native leek), Banksias and appleberry among other trees, shrubs and ground covers.
“It’s such a positive thing,” Ms Burke said. “Planet Ark’s vision is for the world to be living in balance with nature. this collaboration with community and positivity is something we should really encourage.”
