The free event, hosted by the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is running each week at Eden’s Rotary Park look out, and SCMDC manager Kerryn Wood was delighted with the first day’s turn-out.
“We had over 50 people visit the headland, and saw close to ten pods of whales in those two hours,” Ms Wood said last Friday.
“They were way out on the horizon, but there was lots of breaching and the sun was out. All in all; YAY!”
Ms Wood said people “were stoked” to have the opportunity come together for the whale watching experience, and tell their own stories.
“Everyone was really excited we had binoculars to hand out. That really made the experience awesome,” Ms Wood said.
Weather permitting, the service will be available at Rotary Park from 10am to 12pm on the Thursdays of September 1, 8, 15, Tuesday September 20, Thursday September 22, Tuesday October 4 and Thursday October 6.
Ms Wood hopes this unique initiative will be popular over the school holidays, and reminds community that it’s a free activity and there’s no need to book a place.
