Darren “Dash” Bowater from the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler reports it was a tough fishing weekend in both estuaries and open water. “Best bet for a bit of action at present seems to be along the golden sands in hope of a few salmon. Small metals 20-40grm, or the trusty old paternoster rig with a surf popper up top and a pilly or stripey on the bottom hook seem to be the go. Best times will be dusk/dawn in a suitable gutter along your favourite beach. Or for the office workers then the last hour of the rising tide till an hour or so after the turn to the bottom should produce results. Good time of year to be catching up on all your maintenance, whether it be boat, trailer, rods, reels, update old lines etc, as we are crawling our way through the two lesser fish performing months of the year being July and August.”
John Moore of Narooma Fishing Charters reported there was a lack of live bait to be had at Montague Island on Sunday, so he knew it was going to be a hard day. “The water temp at Montague Is was 16.5c, which was 2 degrees warmer than on the beach. After trolling proved fruitless, we resorted to using squid. Landed some nice mowies, but only the one legal kingfish today. Keeping with an obvious pattern, Robin from Leeton boated the nice fat 66cm king taken in 63mts to the north of the island. Plenty of kings on the sounder, so will have to wait until next weekend for our next crack at live bait and hopefully some nice kings.”
The longliners out of Bermagui have been getting into the tuna, according to Scotty from Bermi Bait & Tackle. “SST's are now more favourable and good fish will now be range. The long liner that just unloaded this morning had 120 fish with a number over 90kg. Good weather from Friday onwards and your best chance to catch them inside 150'42. The water the commercials have fished the past 10 days over the 151 line has now pushed westward just nicely.”
NSGFC report: A few Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club members have ventured out lately but there has not been any great catches reported, a few bonitos and snapper and odd undersized kingfish. AGM is August 26, with notifications being sent out by email and mail. If you would like to contribute to the club by being on this new committee, put the required form into the club asap. The last Friday of each month is now an eat-in evening. We will be holding a soup night this Friday, July 29. We will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. Visitors are most welcome to come along and have a chat with the members. – Jan Hemmingsen
