The senior grade Whalers will be looking at a wooden spoon finish, while the women’s line-up has cemented itself in second on the competition ladder and could be the team to upset the minor premier Sea Eagles.
Last week, the Whalers made a long trip to Bermagui for a cold and windy round.
In the women’s match, the Whalers had a slow start, but were kicking well against the gusty winds with both teams going to the first break scoreless.
With the wind at their back, Tammy Whitford hit the first major of the day, while Nicole Crowe controlled the goal square to shepherd several shots through the big sticks.
Inaccuracy was the only pitfall to Eden’s dominance, planting five behinds for just two goals in the period, but took a 17-point lead to the main break.
Kate and Melissa Mitchell were controlling the play by getting the ball out of the centre with the Whalers continuing to control play despite the wind gusts.
The Breakers fired back in the final quarter, but the Whalers held them out well to pick up a handy win with a 45-point buffer.
A club spokesperson said the team’s improvement through the year put the women’s roster in good stead to go far in the finals series.
Best for the Whalers were the Mitchell sisters, Ebony Dykhoff Darrington, Rhiannon Richardson, Stacey Duivesteyn and Tammy Whitford.
Unfortunately for the Eden club, the senior game was the wooden spoon decider, with Eden going down by 30 points in challenging conditions.
Eden had won the match-up earlier in the year and the Breakers were out for their first win.
The Whalers started off well with Luke Grewar kicking one of his two goals early in the piece, while Tom Foats kept up an impressive work rate.
The Whalers had a three-point lead by the first break, but didn’t get full use of the tail-wind.
Liam Wilkinson was showing his class around the ground in the second quarter, but the Breakers showed better use of the gusts to shoot clear by 22 points.
Jayden Spivy was working hard, holding his own against much larger players and Ben Kopeaky-Mills was moving the ball around the wings to the forwards.
The Whalers took control of the ball in the final quarter, but a spokesperson said inaccurate kicking made life hard for the forward line as the Breakers held out for a 30-point win.
Ben Thomas, Nathan Sebire and Wilkinson all led the scoring for Eden with two majors apiece.
Sebire and Jordan Mercial were named best on ground.
The Whalers will play host to the Sea Eagles on Saturday at the Eden ground for the last home and away round of the year.
The club will hold the best and fairest count and a “kick for cash” competition on the day and all are welcome.
