The Sharks secured key wins and are holding down the top spot on the ladder in some grades, but it didn’t stop the Tigers putting them to the test.
After recently knocking over the Bay Tigers 100-0, the Moruya Sharks enjoyed no such success against the Eden outfit, mustering just a 36-10 win over the resilient Eden club.
The Tigers are still reeling from continued injury woes, but fronted up for the test all the same and went down valiantly.
Unfortunately, Eden’s chances of getting a run in the finals are all but slipping away with just a handful of rounds left to play.
Earlier the Tigers’ sister club had battled out a close win over the Sharks 18-14.
Club secretary David Allen said the ladder didn’t reflect the stripped points from the club yet so the win was critical in fighting its way back from sixth place.
“The boys were down 14-4, but fought back brilliantly in the dying stages to get over them,” Allen said.
“Moruya, Bega and Narooma are shaping as the top three so we need to fight our way in over Cooma and Bombala to hit the top four.”
The Tigerettes and under 18s also couldn’t find the points to bag wins over their northern rivals.
The Sharkettes locked in a small lead over Eden’s league-tag line-up, winning 16-4.
The Moruya ladies are holding fourth on the ladder with the Eden outfit in sixth, but there is a large divide in competition points between fourth and fifth as the season nears finals.
The score deficit was a bit wider in the under 18s contest as the Sharks got into a scoring frenzy with a 42-10 scoreline.
With three rounds left to play, the young Tigers / Cobargo combine are still in the running for a top four finish.
The under 18s will head into a bye round this weekend, while the senior grades will tackle the Narooma Devils on their home turf at Bill Smyth Memorial Oval.
The Devils are sitting near the top of the ladder in multiple grades and an upset win by the Tigers and Eels could really shake up the competition standings.
League-tag opens the day from noon at the Narooma ground.
