The Bega Valley Shire Council issued a press release last Wednesday February 17 confirming removal of asbestos from the site as part of a larger demolition project.
“The works will involve demolition of an existing shed, brick building and decommissioning of the fish kill tank,” the BVSC spokesperson said.
"Following removal of asbestos from the cannery site, pedestrian access to Cattle Bay will be open to the public.”
The asbestos cleanup comes hot on the heels of breaking news of legal action by compensation lawyers Slater and Gordon on behalf of the family of the late Don ‘Snow’ Fletcher.
Mr Fletcher was one of the cannery’s longest serving employees, and died of cancer in March 2015.
The Cattle Bay site is now ear-marked for a 154-berth marina, with the Bega Valley Shire Council awarding the demolition tender to John Michelin & Son Pty Ltd.
“The Cattle Bay car park will remain closed for the duration of the project which is estimated to be eight weeks,” the BVSC spokesperson said.
“Parking will be made available on the council owned land adjacent to the cannery site.”
The asbestos cleanup began this morning with the removal of roofing iron, involving a team of men in masks.
Warning signs and red tape mark the fence-line, with security officers on patrol.
