But for others, for many reasons, it can be a time of great sadness and hardship.
This year, people such as Calle Calle Street resident Wendy Ramage, are determined to make a difference to those in need.
And they plan to do it one can at a time.
Mrs Ramage is inviting caring members of the community to join the 15 Can Challenge, by donating one item for the next 15 weeks.
"We're asking that every week when you do your grocery shopping, buy just one extra item of non perishable food, for example, soup or baked beans, to donate to the challenge," Mrs Ramage said.
"And invite as many of your friends as you can to join in.
"Remember that together we can change someone's life," she said.
Mrs Ramage is asking schools and the business community to also get involved.
Just before Christmas, the cans will be made into hampers and given to St Vincent de Paul, the Uniting Church and Anglicare for distribution to those people most in need.
For more information or to offer assistance, please phone Mrs Ramage on 0424 633 856.
The Eden Magnet is proud to be part of the 15 Can Challenge by being a drop-off point for donations.
A collection box has been set up in the Magnet's office.
