This week, opposition leader Bill Shorten introduced a marriage equality bill to federal parliament, encouraging other MPs to “step up” and show their support.
But the coalition - and the staunchly christian Prime Minister Tony Abbott - does not support the legislation, and the House of Representatives voted to adjourn debate.
As pressure mounts for a national referendum to vote on the issue, the Eden Magnet took to the streets on Friday to ask people what they thought.
Carolyn Phillips and Andrew McCaffery, Eden -
"We’re against it.
We’re Christians and believe in the sanctity of marriage.
If people want to be partners, that’s ok, but marriage is between a man and a woman.
By the way, we’re getting married in June."
Peter and Julie Mamolis, Wollongong -
It doesn’t bother us. We don’t see a problem with it being legalised.
It’s going to cost taxpayers more to keep argueing about it.
It should be passed through parliament straight away.
People need to get their heads out of the sand.
Natasha Jarrett, Eden -
"I don’t understand why it wasn’t legalised years ago.
Love is love, no matter who it is."
Emma Whiter, Eden -
I don’t agree with it.
Same sex marriage is unnatural and it’s against God’s will.
Kaylene Collins, Eden -
I totally agree with same sex marriage.
They should have the same choices we have.
Shaquille Aldridge, Eden -
"I don’t mind, it doesn’t bother me.
It doesn’t matter what sex you are."
Con Castrissios, Eden -
"I don’t mind same sex marriage.
Love takes many different forms."
