Now, Malcolm Turnbull has set sartorial tongues wagging again by appearing on the cover of the latest edition of men's fashion magazine GQ.
A slick - retouched? - image of the Minister for Communications appears under the cheeky headline, "Primed Minister. Malcolm Turnbull: A man on the move. Next stop the Lodge. Maybe."
With pursed lips, steely blue eyes, clenched fist and a bold combination of navy suit, striped blue shirt and an orange and white tie, it's an arresting image.
While one news outlet claimed Mr Turnbull had "risked ridicule" by posing for the cover, the image is, in fact, over two years old. GQ dusted off the image from a photo shoot it conducted with Mr Turnbull to accompany an interview published in its March 2013 edition.
Mr Turnbull, who agreed to the latest interview before February's spill motion against Prime Minister Tony Abbott, was not available for fresh photos for the latest edition.
In the interview, which will hit news stands on Monday, Mr Turnbull gives his strongest suggestion yet that he would have stood for the Liberal leadership if the spill motion had succeeded.
"People would have been astonished if I hadn't," he is quoted as saying.
Mr Turnbull also rebuffs suggestions he would pare back his progressive persona to win back the leadership.
"Honestly, it's this simple: I get out of bed and I am me," he told the magazine. "If people find me persuasive or offensive that's up to them, but I am comfortable in my own skin and I honestly never ask, 'How can I change myself to be more appealing to people?'."
In his previous GQ interview in 2013, Mr Turnbull said: "The proposition that I won't lead the Liberal Party again does not cause me to lose any sleep. I resolved, when I decided to stay in Parliament, that I would do everything I could to give Tony a loyalty and a consistency that not all my colleagues gave me. I've done that."
Interviews with glossy magazines often appeal to politicians and their advisers because they are perceived as "softer" than those with newspapers or current affairs television programs. That's not to say they are risk free: former prime minister Julia Gillard attracted widespread ridicule in 2013 when she posed for Australian Women's Weekly knitting a toy kangaroo for Prince George.
