The championships coincide with the annual Pambula Motorbike Show at the Oaklands Event Centre on Saturday, and the monthly Pambula markets at various locations around town on Sunday, ensuring a hive of activity.
It all kicks off from 6.30pm on Friday night at the Pambula Sporting Complex, as the teams march past ahead of the official opening at 7pm.
Championship events will then run from 7.30am until 5pm on Saturday, and from 7.30am until the presentations at 1pm on Sunday.
With 26 teams and RFS crews coming from right across NSW to compete in 14 events, the standard is sure to be high.
Entry is free throughout the weekend, with an array of events like you’ve never seen before.
Your old favourites are there, including the chainsaw challenge, head-to-head, sprint challenge and fireground fundamentals.
But if it’s variety you’re after, you’ll be spoilt for choice as crews tackle simulated fires in different environments, car crashes, and navigation challenges that pit fire fighters against the local terrain.
Take your pick from the creatively named renovation rescue, holiday traffic gridlock, airbase inferno, “MAOIM”, crash landing, commissioner impossible, equipment catastrophe, find ’em and fix ’em, transfer torment and the locally focused Pambula drop events.
Check out a summary of each event below.
For the foodies, there’s even a catering challenge to determine ‘Whose Kitchen Rules’, while the Pony Club will be on hand to run the catering stall.
There will be thrills for the kids, who will be able to get up close and personal with the RFS chopper, which will be providing demonstrations over the weekend.
Over 100 local volunteers are involved in setting up and running the championships, which are held every two years and is making its first trip to the Bega Valley.
Meanwhile, the Pambula Motorbike Show will take place at Oaklands Event Centre from 11am-5pm on Saturday, with markets at the Pambula Recreation Ground and Town Hall between 8am and 1pm the following day.
Pambula Beach Discovery Holiday Park manager Laurie O’Shea said the bumper weekend is set to be a big boost to local business.
“It tends to be a very quiet period heading into the school holidays, so this is a huge boost for us and for the whole community,” he said.
“The RFS are staying here with us; they’ve booked out all the accommodation and are using the north end of the park for their base camp for the juniors.
“They started arriving on Tuesday and are continuing to get here, so we’re ready for a big weekend.”
Accommodation is filling up fast, with most Pambula providers reporting very limited, if any spaces, available.
1. Renovation Rescue
A multiple priority challenge in which senior crews complete a range of village firefighter tasks under simulated village fire ground conditions.
2. Holiday Traffic Gridlock
Crews will respond to simulated vehicle incidents, facing an array of different classes of fires.
The challenge is designed to test each crew's ability to respond to situations using appropriate extinguishing agents, prioritising response needs and fire suppression activities while maintaining crew safety and working with other emergency services.
3. Airbase Inferno
Crews will attempt to combine skill with the equipment available on the tanker to complete a range of tasks under a simulated fire ground situation.
4. "MAOIM"
Teams are given a task that may change in priority as the scenario unfolds. The environmental surrounds will not be conducive to making decisions. Things are not as they appear, and confusion may occur.
5. Crash Landing
This challenge sees requires crews to combine teamwork with the equipment on the tanker to navigate to a given grid reference and complete a range of tasks in a major event, while working with other agencies.
6. Pambula Drop
Crews will navigate from point-to-point in unfamiliar terrain whilst dealing with incidents as they arise in an event by combining teamwork, skills and fitness. The winners will be the fastest team to accurately navigate to all checkpoints and complete any additional tasks as required.
7. Commissioner Impossible
This event aims to present teams with a unique experience designed to test their teamwork, initiative, and ingenuity - essential skills for effective fire ground operations. The environment presented to the teams will be unique and noisy, making ordinary communications difficult. Teams, prepare to get wet!
8. Equipment Catastrophe
Sometimes, things don't quite go to plan. In this task, teams will need to combine problem solving skills with fire ground maintenance and repair techniques to successfully complete a series of tasks involving equipment failure, and inadequate equipment... what could possibly go wrong?
9. Head-to-Head
In this junior teams event, crews will need to combine skills and ability to extinguish a fire utilising water transfer techniques under a simulated fire ground situation.
10. Find 'Em and Fix 'Em
The communication, map reading, navigation and emergency care skills of crews are under the spotlight in this challenge, as crews are faced with a range of situations in a remote bush location. This challenge will also test the crew's leadership, initiative and teamwork.
11. Transfer Torment
Another junior teams event, which tests crews' skills in managing water transfer to complete a range of tasks under simulated fire ground conditions.
12. Fire Ground Fundamentals
Crews' understanding and implementation of standard procedures for communications, media, and providing a situation report are tested in this challenge. Time and documentation management are crucial.
13. Sprint Challenge
Teams will complete a series of tasks as they occur in the course, while returning a spare tyre to a Cat 7 tanker.
14. Chainsaw Challenge
An individual challenge, this event will test the knowledge and skills of each contestant, chainsaw cutting techniques and safety of operation.
