Local emergency service workers from police, ambulance, SES, RFS, marine rescue and fire brigades will tee off in the inaugural Essential Services Cup challenge this Friday.

The event will be held at Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club as a way of saying ‘thanks’ to all emergency service workers.
Peter Weire, a volunteer at Merimbula Police Station, has taken it upon himself to make sure the efforts of these people don’t go unrecognised.
“They put their service out there and never really get any thanks,” he said, “so we’ve all got to give a bit back.”
Mr Weire said the event is open to workers and volunteers of the police force, ambulance service, SES, Rural Fire Service, fire brigade and marine rescue.
Emergency Department staff are encouraged to join the ambulance team if they wish to be a part of the fun day.
The cost is $20 per person, which includes a round on the golf course and lunch.
“The Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club has given up its course for the day and is providing lunch for only $20, which is a considerably reduced price,” Mr Weire said.
Each service will be pitted against one another in an individual stableford.
“The service that wins gets a trophy and bragging rights for the next 12 months.”
Mr Weire said the day will become an annual event which he hopes will attract greater numbers each year from across the state.
He said the day would not be possible without the wonderful support of local business houses.
Prize donations include an engraved trophy from Merimbula Jewellers for the winner, NTP prizes - one night stay and breakfast for two courtesy of Robin’s Nest, $150 dinner voucher at Zanzibar Café, $100 dinner voucher at the Wharf Restaurant, two nights’ stay for family of up to six at Merimbula Beach Holiday Park plus dinner for two at the Cheeky Mango, straightest drive – fishing trip for two courtesy of Fishpen Charters.
Participants will also have the opportunity to enter two $20 draws with funds raised going towards the purchase of toys for the children’s ward of the new regional hospital at Bega.
The first draw prize consists of a $750 Harvey Norman voucher with $500 donated by the Police Association and $250 from Harvey Norman; draw two is a $600 prize of a Summerland Travel voucher thanks to the Police Association ($500) and Summerland Travel ($100).
The day begins with a shot gun start between 9.30am and 10am and Mr Weire is expecting a great, fun day for this inaugural event.
