Patterson didn’t bother to look at the big screen. She didn’t get drawn into the excitement that buzzed around her. If the callow teenager, who were she not here would be studying for her year 12, was nervous she betrayed no hint of it.

Were she not so young and raw to this experience the assumption would be the Australian high jumper would win gold. She jumped 1.94m on the Gold Coast before she left Australia. She won gold at the World Youth Games last year she went on to jump 1.96m only months later – the highest jump by a 17-year-old anywhere, ever.

Patterson wonders why her age or experience should come into it at all. With a confidence she allowed others to jump at lesser heights before peeling off the tracksuit when the bar reached 1.81m.

Wearing long tights for the cool Scottish summer day as cold as a Leongatha winter afternoon she cleared the height by, oh, 20cms. The second jump was at 1.85m and again she loped over the bar with a minimum of effort.

“It was good to finally be able to jump I'd been waiting around for a while. It was a great atmosphere but good to get the jumps done and get straight into a final,” Patterson said.

“It wasn't too bad (the atmosphere), I was actually looking at it from a new experience, I was really calm and jumping like I usually do so I was really happy with that.

“It was huge, amazing but pretended it was like any other meet like I usually do. It definitely fires you up and gets the adrenalin pumping but you've got to keep calm and just jump like it's any other competition. I never look (at herself on the big screen) I’m just away with the fairies jumping.”

Patterson managed to blinker out the extraneous and did what was needed to qualify with a minimum of effort. But she has a disarming maturity about her – she has come here not to experience the games, she has come here to win.

“I'm feeling really good and just going out there for a PB and whatever comes with that I'll be happy with for sure. I feel really good and jumping well so who knows what could happen,” she said.

Zoe Timmins, who also didn’t miss a height, and Hannah Joye both also qualified.

Benn Harradine’s defence of his discus gold medal was auspicious for the fact he qualified with a 61.06m throw then had to hurry from the field because he had been stung by a bee. Julian Wruck also squeezed through with a 59m throw.

Brittany McGowan qualified for the 800m final with an exceptionally good run of 2:03.08mins. In a tough heat she was among the front runners and finished third.

Margaret Gayen qualified for the final in the long jump with a jump of 6.34m.
