Last weekend marked the 50th anniversary of the Eden Ambulance Service, and past ambos and current paramedics welcomed a steady stream of visitors and well-wishers through the doors of the ambulance station on Saturday.

Some great stories were told of days past and more recent times, and one theme rang true through it all, they love what they do.
Relative newcomer, Yestyn Bawden, has been a paramedic for three years and in Eden for 18 months, but plans on staying for much, much longer.
“Being a paramedic is great, just great.
“We do different things every day.
“My colleagues are interesting, fun people to work with.
“I have seen a lot of caring people since I’ve been down here,” Yestyn said.

He plans to stay in Eden for another ten years, while his young family enjoys what he thinks is a lovely town, with everything they need close by, including the snow fields.
Station officer Steve Marks has been in Eden for 11 years and a paramedic for 28 years.
“I love it,” Steve says.
“The range of work is great.
“One day you can be trying to find someone in the bush and then you can be 20kms out to sea on a yacht in the ocean bobbing up and down.
“You talk to nice people.
“You take people to hospital who are talking to you, we have a little laugh.
“You have your days when you wish you hadn’t gone to work because of the trauma and the sadness, but that’s not every day.”
