Clark's bid to join Fremantle came to fruition in the dying stages of the trade period which concluded 1930 AEDT.

Geelong wanted either pick No.19 from Fremantle, or pick No.22 and a future third-round selection to make the deal happen.

In the end, the Cats got pick No.22 and a third-round selection but had to send a fourth-round selection back to Fremantle along with Clark.

Clark, who had one more year to run on his Geelong contract, was desperate to return home to WA after struggling for opportunities at the Cats over the past two seasons.

It was reported Clark and Wells had a testy phone conversation after negotiations had stalled and that the wingman had abruptly hung up.

Wells said it simply didn't happen.

"He definitely didn't hang up on me," Wells said.

"He just asked politely if we could get the deal done, that he wanted to go home to Fremantle.

"But he was also clear that he might be coming back to Geelong. There was nothing at all firey or newsworthy of that phone call."

Pick No.19 holds special value because it will be the first pick on the second night of the two-day trade period.

It means Fremantle will have almost 24 hours to analyse the remaining talent left in the draft field.

More importantly, rival clubs are likely to come thick and fast at Fremantle with attractive trade offers for pick No.19 if a player they highly valued went undrafted in the first round.

Clark has signed a four-year deal at Fremantle.

The 20-year-old was taken by Geelong with pick No.15 in the 2018 national draft and was an instant hit in his first year, playing 18 games in 2019.

But he managed just 14 over the past two seasons and was desperate to land at Fremantle.

Geelong traded in Hawthorn veteran Jon Ceglar after losing Darcy Fort to Brisbane in another late deal.

The Cats are also set to sign former Crows small forward Tyson Stengle as a delisted free agent on a two-year deal.

Stengle was axed by the Crows earlier this year following a series of off-field incidents, but attracted the interest of Geelong after starring in the SANFL.

Former Adelaide and Carlton star Eddie Betts, who is now part of Geelong's coaching staff, convinced the Cats to take a punt on Stengle.

"We've done our research, we've made our inquiries," Wells said.

"Tyson has convinced us that he's put his past behind him and is looking forward to a great future."
