The spill occurred due to a build-up of wet wipes causing a blockage in a manhole.
Water quality testing has started and people are advised against swimming at Cattle Bay and Cocora Beach area until Wednesday (September 22).
A spokesperson for council said, this was a reminder to not flush wet wipes and nappies down the toilet as flushing does not make them go away.
"We are currently awaiting water quality test results following the sewer spill. Tests will be repeated next week following delivery of first round results.
"This sewer spill could have been avoided if wet wipes were correctly disposed of. Wet wipes have no place in a sewer system, instead they should be placed in red landfill bins."
Staff are on site cleaning up and authorities and stakeholders have been notified.
