What began as a few quiet mutterings erupted into a chorus of concerns for footy-goers as Andrew Constance's Facebook and John Barilaro's Twitter feed confirmed what had not been said during NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's 11am briefing: All of NSW was going into lockdown - and worse yet, it was happening in about two hours.
The Breakers had just wrapped up a sound defeat of the Merimbula Diggers and the Tathra Sea Eagles and Narooma Lions senior men's teams had taken the ground for their warm ups.
By the time play started though it was as if the entire crowd - estimated at around 200-300 people - were collectively on their phones seeing, or being told by friends and family the news.
Within minutes, officials had met and made the difficult decision that the next game - scheduled for 4.20pm - would not go ahead.
Rumours and theories crystallised into fact as Ministers posted the details of the impending lockdown orders and while orderly, it also began a steady exodus of fans from Berrambool in a rush to make the shops, or the lengthy drive home before the 5pm deadline.
