The 16-year-old got to grips with a yellowfin that officials estimate would have weighed more than 70kg, but following a three hour and 25-minute fight to bring the gargantuan fish up to the boat, it was savaged by a shark.
Members offered their commiserations to Jemma, who would have taken out the competition fishing off her father's boat Reel Jem.
Poor weather hindered the start of the yearly tournament, but anglers did venture out onto the water on Sunday and Monday.
Conditions off Merimbula were favourable and quality yellowfin were caught with Geoff McMahon capturing a 66kg yellowfin.
Captain Trevor Chippendale of Eden also snagged his own 63.5kg yellowfin for second. Tura's Heather Sutterby claimed third with a 58.5kg catch.
In regular fishing news, weather again put a damper on offshore fishing over the weekend. However, when the seas abate try for ocean flathead off Kianinny at 20 fathoms and also off Bournda Island, Tura Headland and near the Artificial Reefs in Merimbula Bay.
Morwong and snapper are reported from White Rock out of Kianinny, and also Lennards Island, North Head and Boyds Tower down to Mowarry. Gummy shark remain available on the inside of Horseshoe reef off Haycock Beach at 15 fathoms.
When the seas are not huge Australian salmon and tailor remain on the chew off the headlands and Tura, Main, Haycock and Aslings beaches. Salmon are also active in the Pambula River and some great catches together with tailor, reported from trolling, spinning silver lures and both hard and soft plastics.
In the estuaries near the entrances where the run in tides are bringing cleaner water some lovely trevally and tailor remain active. Try soft plastics.
Further up the estuaries; bream, trevally, dusky flathead and some whiting have migrated to the deeper waters to avoid the fresh. Catches can be made and good results are reported using metal vibes cast to the bottom and jigged smoothly. With the winter solstice past on 21 June we can now look forward to longer days and hopefully better fishing conditions.
