The NRL planned for a public media hub after matches in this week's Magic Round in Brisbane, with the two coaches and two captains to appear at the same time.

Fans were to be given the chance to ask questions, along with journalists, via a moderator, with the conferences to be conducted among the Suncorp Stadium crowd.

The scheme, which was intended to boost fan engagement, drew the ire of several coaches, including South Sydney veteran Bennett who had made it clear he would refuse to attend.

Instead, the master coach claimed on Friday he would only go to the regular press conference room and would happily risk a fine from the NRL.

"They can't make me go and sit there," Bennett said.

"Unless they physically take me there, they won't get me there, so it ain't going to happen.

"I'm not a fan of it because I know some of the situations that can happen regarding that and I don't want to be exposed to that."

It's understood several other coaches also raised concerns privately.

Hours later, the NRL relented and scrapped the idea.

Beyond Bennett's stance, fears were also raised over whether spectators could become too vocal around the press conferences.

The short turnaround between games was also an issue.

Players are required to be out of the sheds before half-time in the next game, while some clubs will also be rushing to catch flights.
