The Bureau of Meteorology have also released a minor flood warning for the Bega River early on Wednesday morning.

Very heavy rainfall Tuesday night over the Bega River catchment has caused significant river level rises along the Bega River and Candelo Creek. This rain is expected to cause minor flooding along the Bega River in low-lying areas.

The Bega River at Bega North is likely to peak near 6.00 metres around 10am Wednesday with minor flooding.

Council reports that Jellat remains open, but motorists are urged to be cautious with flood levels still to hit their predicted peak.

The Bemboka River was also sitting at 2.85 metres at the time of the warning (8.30am Wednesday) and continuing to rise.

The SES are urging motorists to drive to conditions and not to drive in flood waters.

Road closures at 9am include Poplar Avenue, East Street, Bega Street and Parrabel Street at the corner of Parrabel and Angeldale Road.

Old Wallagoot road - closed at Kalaru end through to Penuca Road.

Further to road closures, Bega SES have had reports of a number of landslips including on the Princes Hwy near the Bega lookout and in the Snowy Mountains Hwy between Haslingtons Lane and Walls Flat Rd.

SES crews were also on hand when a landslip was reported near Stony Creek north of Bega late on Tuesday night.

The rainfall figures have been some of the highest one-day totals in recent history with more than 140mm recorded at Angledale in the 24 hours to 9am.

Bega also recorded 140mm. Merimbula airport was inundated with 125mm to 9am, while Lochiel recorded 109mm.
