Over several decades the Lions Club has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the coastal track from the recently asphalted car park down to the sand at Middle Beach but over time many steps had become eroded and required the addition of compactable fill to replace the eroded soil.
The Lions Club, having members who are now senior in age, decided to put out a call to a young energetic community group for assistance with transferring the fill to the affected steps, some being 300 metres away, using buckets.
This call was immediately answered by the Pambula Panthers whose members turned up and used this labour-intensive task as a training session for the upcoming 2021 football season.
In just over an hour with buckets laden with fill, the team transported a total of two cubic metres of compactable fill down to the affected steps. The fill was then shovelled, raked and compressed into position by members of the Lions Club.
In appreciation of the Panthers' efforts, the Lions Club provided a sausage sizzle.
Event organiser Ric Vanderbom said the collaboration had been beneficial to both clubs.
"Both clubs certainly achieved their objectives at Middle Beach Track in completing this task and the Lions Club are now looking at further projects and may well approach other community groups for their assistance," Mr Vanderbom said.
He thanked the Pambula Panthers for their community assistance and council for providing the compactable fill.
"The Lions Club encourages community members to walk this newly rejuvenated track from the Cliff St carpark down to the beach, but remember, the return is uphill," Mr Vanderbom said.
