After cancellations over the past two events, a club spokesman said there is now concern about continuity and ramping up for a successful event in 2022.
Easing the mood is continued strength in fishing with a strong East Austrailan Current providing 23 waters ensuring some spectacular marlin fishing including off the coast of Merimbula.
Paul Jones and Craig Woolley had the club's first tag and release catches of the season.
The weekend saw some spectacular flathead catches in deeper waters off Kianniny, mainly tiger flathead which have moved closer inshore to spawn but also some magnificent blue spotted sand flathead. Congratulations to Lindon Thompson of Berambool for his outstanding 591mm sand flathead. Try 23 fathoms out from Kianniny and 20 fathoms at White Rock.
Morwong have really come on the chew and some great fish taken off the White Rock reefs as well as Haycock and Boyds Tower. Snapper are also on the chew with the commencement of the January prawn run. Best results from anchoring and using burley bombs at depth. There are also lots of large slimy mackerel about and when taken these are the best bait for everything. For Australian salmon off the beaches try Tura, Haycock and Aslings at Eden. Anglers at Tura Beach report retrieval of just Australian salmon heads of due to shark activity.
The club advises all boaters to be cautious, the Merimbula Bar is shallower than ever and is causing havoc for low-tide crossing.
Marine Rescue Merimbula maintain their restriction only crossing the bar within 3 hours of high tide.
The club expects a good run of squid now the January prawn run is on, try Merimbula wharf or Tura headland.
The channels at Merimbula and Pambula are productive for bream, dusky flathead, flounder as well as tailor and trevally.
The club encourages catch and release only of dusky flathead and large bream as our estuaries are only home to limited quantities.
We have reports of good bream in the Bega River up at Blackmans. There are also good tailor and Australian salmon Similarly in the Merimbula channel between the bridge and the entrance.
The clubhouse in Spencer Park will be open from 6.30pm on Friday 15 January. Darragh Reynolds is the scheduled host.
