Council has agreed unanimously to endorse the Bega swimming pool concept plan which will in turn allow staff to develop the project further and look for external funding.

The clock is ticking for the existing pool which was built in 1963 and should be replaced after 60 years in 2023.

The deferment of the swimming pools Special Rate Variation (SRV) means there are no confirmed sources of funding for the planned renewal and council will need to rely on sourcing grant funding for this project to proceed.

However council is expecting to get some funding in from the sale of land in Bega, with the proceeds of the sale to be retained in the asset renewal reserve.

Councillors unanimously agreed to go ahead with the sale of Lots 9 - 12 Sec 1 & 2 DP 1085 at Park Street, Bega. The sale price was kept confidential with council stating its legal fees would be paid from the proceeds of the sale.

Council has also received a formal offer to purchase Lot 5 DP 843822 and Lot 16 DP 112193 Mecklenberg Street, Bega, properties that had been identified for sale by council staff. Councillors agreed that staff should proceed.

In good news for those who get their water from the Bermagui system including the towns of Cobargo and Quaama, council has given the go ahead for work to start on the Brogo water treatment system following the assessment of tenders.

It is the second water treatment plant (of an anticipated four) to be built in the shire. On completion the WTP will provide treated water to the Bermagui supply system and is funded through the NSW Government's Safe and Secure Water funding program.

Detailed design will commence in January 2021 and take six months to complete with construction expected to follow in June 2021. The construction and subsequent testing and commissioning phases are scheduled to take 18-21 months to complete. The plant is to be fully operational by summer 2022, council staff said.

Council secured $10.07m in co-funding for the $12m project.
