Theatre Onset was in the middle of rehearsing for a large cast production, called Abstract Expressionism, when the COVID-19 pandemic began earlier this year resulting in the show being called off.

But the theatre company has come up with the idea of a coronavirus restriction-friendly production that will be performed in October, adhering to social distance health rules of course.

Bat Soup has small casts in short plays, with several written by Far South Coast writers, as well as a 14-minute comedic musical called 21 Chump Street by Hamilton writer Lin-Manuel Miranda that features a band of local musicians.

Writer and actor for the show Jamie Forbes said the region's theatre community had been devastated by the impact of the pandemic, and Theatre Onset was not the only local group that had to cancel a production.

"It's very difficult but at some point we had to go ahead and find a way to do what we do best," he said.

"The journey has been worth it because the kids are so into doing something."

He described Bat Soup as a show of "comedy, drama, music and hygiene" influenced by the pandemic, saying the production's title was a "nod to the possible origins of the virus".

"We are acknowledging it and having fun with it," he said, saying the sketches he wrote that are in the show were inspired by the pandemic.

Forbes said rehearsals for 21 Chump Street, which is based on a true story about a high school student who falls in love with an undercover police officer, had been going very well with a fantastic group of young performers.

"We are so lucky to be able to do it, and we've got a crack band to do it with," Forbes said.

Mahamati, who is directing several of the short plays, encouraged audiences to come along to the shows as "there's not many opportunities to get out and see things at the moment!"

"Some of it is really funny, and the musical is great so come and support the local teenagers who are really doing such a good job," she said.

"Who wouldn't want to come out for a night of music, comedy, drama and hygiene?"

Bat Soup will run on October 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11, including two Sunday matinees, at the Grace Theatre on the grounds of Mumbulla School, Bega.

All showings will comply to COVID-19 safety guidelines, with distanced seating. Rehearsals are also compliant, as the plays have small casts rehearsals have been conducted in small groups.
