An ongoing police operation aimed at preventing livestock theft will have a high-visibility presence on the South Coast from August 31.

NSW Police said 20,354 sheep and 864 cattle at a cost of $3.1million have been stolen from the south of the state over the last three years.
Known as Operation Stop Check allows officers of all ranks to inspect vehicles carrying livestock, and is aimed at identifying and targeting loads which may have been stolen, and disrupting the movement of stolen stock within the state.
"Livestock theft has a significant impact on farmers across Lake Illawarra, Monaro, Murrumbidgee, Murray River, Riverina, South Coast, Wollongong and The Hume Police Districts, with a total of 406 incidents recorded within these areas in the past three years," NSW Police said.
The operation will launch on Monday, August 31, they said.
