Snow dumps on Bombala, power cut to homes, highway closed

UPDATE, 12.25pm: LiveTraffic.com reports the Monaro Highway has reopened but traffic is affected in both directions due to heavy snowfall in the region.

Reduce your speed and exercise caution as heavy snow in the area may affect visibility. Motorists should turn their headlights on and drive to the conditions

UPDATE, 12.20pm: The power outages have continued to spread during the heavy snow falling on the Monaro.

Essential Energy now reports cuts to customers in and around Bombala and north at Ando in addition to the earlier cuts to Delegate, Craigie and Corrowong.

According to Essential's outage map, close to 750 customers are currently affected as of 12.20pm

UPDATE, 11am: The Monaro Hwy from Holts Flat (where it joins the Snowy Mountains Highway) south to the Victorian border is now closed to traffic in both directions due to the heavy snow.

A snowstorm in the Bombala area has seen cars stranded and power cut to hundreds.

Bombala resident Sally-Ann Thompson, who sent in the above photos to the Bombala Times, said she estimated around 10cm (four inches) had fallen already, and while the sun poked its face out briefly, the white stuff was falling with a vengeance.

"It is heading north at a slow rate. Ando had none until about an hour ago," she said at 10.30am Wednesday, August 5.

"On the Bombala side of Nimmitabel turn off it started there about half an hour ago with really big flakes.

"Cars were stuck on the Maybe St hill and I was in second gear all the way home - it was building up on the car even while being driven! Never seen it like this before."

Essential Energy is reporting a wide swathe of unplanned interruptions, with around 250 customers affected through Delegate, Craigie, Bendoc and Corrowong.

According to Weatherzone, it's currently 0.8C in Bombala heading for a maximum of 6C!
