According to Weatherzone, in Bega temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in the early afternoon while wind speeds were 37km/h around the same time.

Temperatures were lower in Merimbula, getting to just over 28 degrees Celsius in the early afternoon, while wind speeds got to 26km/h.

While the day had received a very high fire danger rating from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), conditions had eased by Friday and were expected to be less severe for the weekend.

"The weather conditions for the weekend are going to be quieter from what we had over the last couple of days," NSW Rural Fire Service Superintendent John Cullen said.

The Bega Valley was given a low-moderate fire danger rating for Friday, but Superintendent Cullen said over the next couple of days it could ease into the high category.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted temperatures in Bega on Friday would reach a maximum of 25 degrees Celsius on the day and the rest of the weekend, which would also see partly cloudy conditions and light winds top 25km/h.

In Merimbula, temperatures across the weekend were expected to reach 22 degrees Celsius and it would also see partly cloudy conditions and light winds topping 25km/h.

Superintendent Cullen said there was less smoke across the Bega Valley on Friday than the previous day, which had drifted south from the fires on the north coast, and he hoped it would clear further over the weekend, but he said it was "hard stuff to predict".

Two fires started in the Bega Valley earlier in the week, both which were being controlled by Forestry Corporation.

Superintendent Cullen said the one at Bonnie Doon Rd at Pericoe was contained but crews were continuing to patrol it as a safety precaution, while a lightning strike late on Thursday off Allan Brooke Rd at Yambulla had started a fire that had reached 20ha but the less-severe weather conditions provided crews the chance of controlling it.
