Not everyone would make it a public event though!
For Nell Allen-Coen, Saturday's birthday haircut was a way to give back to charity organisations that have given her so much over the years.
To mark her 23rd birthday (actually Friday, but she said the excitement and anxiety of Saturday made it feel more like a birthday) Nell planned to donate 40cm of her lovely long hair to Variety Children's Charity.
As it turned out, she was able to measure out 47cm and even auctioned off the extra length to rustle up additional donations to Variety and Starlight Children's Foundation.
The hair was prepared and snipped off by Karlee Cohen and Kayla Denham from Hair Lamartine and will go to Variety to create wigs for children in need due to various medical conditions.

The festivities were all held in Eden's main street outside IGA, with live music from Kara Imagen, Rotary on the barbecue, delicious cupcakes by Sandy Huff and raffles of donations from many local supportive businesses.
A final amount will be known in coming days once the donations, online fundraiser, raffle sales and cake sale takings are collated.
Pambula Rotary were selling sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls on Saturday, with all their proceeds also going to the cause.
The online fundraiser remains open for now. Click here to donate
