Game fishing has become a little quiet about the shelf with anglers needing to go about 10-15Nm further east to get into the tuna action. Closer in, some of our anglers have turned to deep drop fishing in waters of about 400m depth. As noted previously a couple of broadbill swordfish were captured by deep dropping as well as lovely fish like the Blue Eye pictured.

Ocean flathead remain on the chew with good patches off Tura Headland and Bournda Island. Try also near White Rock and Kianinny and north to Baronda Headland. Best depth seems to be at 15-17 fathoms off Tura Headland and Baronda.
Reef fishing has become a little more difficult with strong inshore currents continuing off Merimbula. For snapper and morwong it is probably best to anchor and berley. Try also Lennards, North Head and Boyd's Tower. Good tailor and salmon are schooling off the beaches, Haycock and Tura in particular. At Haycock there are also some good bream and luderick near the rocks using prawn bait.
At Pambula some good trevally are on the chew near the shark hole as well as some lovely bream. Prawns are a fail-safe bait. At Merimbula there are lots of tailor in the back lake plus reasonable size bream and snapper deeper down, prawns, pilchards and soft plastics are all useful. Garfish are about in the lower channel near Fishpen, use crumbed bread for berley and prawn bait.
The Bega River has now closed and the temperature near the bridge at Mogareeka is down to about 11 degrees. Using soft plastics; small tailor, a few bream and dusky flathead can be found further upriver where the water is a little warmer.
On Friday evening, June 21, the club will be hosting a $10 per head Casserole Night to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. The club house in Spencer Park will be open from 6pm. The Casserole Night has been organised by the club's social secretary Merrily Bell who, together with her sister Judith, will undertake the Westpac 2019 Drovers Run 4WD Outback Adventure on August 4-17 from Broken Hill, attracting sponsorship for this worthy cause.
