IT'S BEEN dubbed one of the world's greatest natural wonders and witnessing the magic of the Auroroa Borealis - or Northern Lights - is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Now cruise lovers can see this celestial light show on a fully escorted tour on the P&O Aurora with The Senior from London to the Arctic Circle and Northern Norway leaving February 2020.

Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to see this amazing natural phenomenon, which happens only at high latitudes on dark nights from September to March.

After a day's sightseeing in London before departing from Southampton there are a couple of days at sea relaxing aboard the Aurora - one of the largest P&O ships - as the ship sails northwards in the North Atlantic Ocean before arriving in Alta on Norway's northern coast.

Situated at the head of Alta Fjord, the town is a great spot for viewing the Northern Lights. It's also where the world's first Northern Lights observatory was built in 1899.

After a sightseeing tour of the city there's another chance to see the light show with a tour into the magical Norwegian countryside.

Centuries old: Mountains, snow and these wooden huts on the banks of a fjord make for a typical scene in Norway and are as pretty as a postcard.

The second day in Alta includes a visit to the UNESCO listed Alta Museum with its ancient petroglyphs and the Northern Lights Cathedral. It also travels to the lush green Sautso-Alta canyon.

Later, travellers will learn about the history of the indigenous people, the Sami, on a reindeer sledding tour before a sky-gazing tour.

The ship is well inside the Arctic Circle on Day 9 of the cruise when it arrives at Tromso, famed as a Northern Lights viewing point. The city's historic centre is distinguished by its centuries-old wooden houses.

At night the tour will head into the countryside with an expert guide to photograph the lights at their best.

The tour then continues south to Alesund, a traditional fishing town with an Art Nouveau influence. On a sightseeing tour will take in the region's unique architecture with free time for exploring and shopping.

From Alesund the Aurora continues its journey southward before stopping at its final Norwegian destination of Stavanger - gateway to Norway's scenic fjordland.

Regarded as the "Cradle of the Vikings", Stavanger has its own rich heritage. A tour will include a stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old Stavanger learning about the early history of the city and its more than 170 listed and restored wooden houses from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and a 12th century cathedral.
